I haven’t been able to get out much recently and have missed visiting my feathered friends. So I was excited to grab my camera and stop by Huntington Beach State Park earlier this week.
Of all the birds I’ve photographed, I enjoy the anhingas the most. They have such personality. They take glory in the sun with outstretched wings yet can be as silly as a small child the next moment.
The anhinga in these photos flew over and literally belly-flopped in the water in front of me. Unfortunately, I had my camera trained on a second bird and I missed that shot. But I did get these photos as he dried himself off.

This week we are asked to share a photo that says “focus” to us.
A visit to Huntington Beach State Park always provides fantastic opportunities to catch the shore birds in action. This particular visit was no exception.
An anhinga posed for me while perched on oyster shells until he was startled by other visitors walking on the causeway.
He took off as I desperately tried to adjust my camera speed to capture the moment – to no avail.
I watched him fly away into the sunset – before I could get the perfect “focus”.

This week we are asked to share our view on order, whether literal, figurative, or anything in between.
“Order” isn’t as important for me as it once was. Years ago clothes were folded nicely in the dresser, shoes were lined up in the closet, dishes washed immediately and the bed was always made. Now my undies are carelessly tossed in the dresser, my flip flops are always by the back door and bowls and spoons from last night’s ice cream will sit in the sink overnight. The bed is still made every day though – that was my dad’s one pet peeve. If he saw your bed unmade, he would insist you make it – even if it was only 30 minutes until bedtime.
Symmetry is a different story. There’s something about the evenness and balance that appeals to me. Symmetry is calm. Symmetry is peace. Symmetry is serenity. Symmetry calls to me and I follow.

On a recent visit to Huntington Beach State Park to take bird photos, I saw a dozen alligators floating by.
I’ve never seen this many alligators out at one time but it’s mating season and the gators are here looking for a date.
They don’t approach as long as you keep your distance but it was very difficult to focus on the birds while constantly looking over my shoulder to see if the alligators had moved. Despite that, I managed to get several great shots of egrets, anhingas and cormorants and I will be posting those soon.
