Crescent and Palmetto – SC State Flag
Although the state flag was not adopted until 1861, its origins date from the Revolutionary War. The palmetto tree signifies strength for South Carolina after successfully defending Fort Moultrie in 1776. The crescent represents a gorget worn on the caps of the Revolutionary soldiers.
